Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi has denied the accuracy of reports claiming that technical working-group meetings are being held in Doha within the framework of the memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington.
In a statement released today, Gharibabadi stated: "No technical meetings with the American side have been scheduled for this week for the working groups within the framework of the memorandum of understanding." He noted, however, that consultations are ongoing with Qatar, "including what relates to following up on the implementation of the other party's commitments," in reference to the United States.
He added: "Despite the continuation of consultations with Qatar, including those related to monitoring the implementation of the opposing party's commitments, the news circulated by some media outlets regarding the holding of technical talks for the working groups in Doha is incorrect."
On the ground, maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz is experiencing a decline, with transit operations currently taking place via the Iranian corridor in light of aggressive American measures, according to the Tasnim News Agency.
The agency reported that "commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz continues, albeit in a limited capacity, following attacks that targeted two tankers near the strait in recent days, which raised deep concerns among shipowners regarding transit through this waterway. Data indicates that most transit operations have taken place through the lane designated by Iran."
According to maritime vessel-tracking data, a limited number of ships transited the strategic waterway over the weekend. Among them were two empty Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC) that entered the Gulf, with the majority of transits utilizing the route designated by Iran. Additionally, several vessels subject to US sanctions entered the strategic corridor, according to Tasnim.
Despite the drop in traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, the volume of movement has shown an increase compared to the days of the war on Iran. According to Tasnim, this indicates the existence of an understanding between Iran and the United States. Statistics also show that restoring maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz to its pre-war levels will take several months.
