The Israeli military has issued new mass displacement orders demanding that residents of large parts of Gaza City and the northern part of the besieged Palestinian territory leave their homes immediately.
In a statement released on Sunday, an Israeli army spokesperson called on residents of at least 17 areas to “immediately evacuate south to the al-Mawasi area” or face lethal consequences.
The evacuation order covered the Jabalia area and most Gaza City districts. It also includes eastern Zeitoun, the Old City, Tuffah, Daraj, Sabra, Jabalia al-Balad and Tel al-Zaatar.
The text messages sent by the Israeli military to many residents also called on the people to head south towards the al-Mawasi area in Khan Yunis, which Israel designated as a so-called humanitarian zone.
Israeli forces had previously launched deadly attacks on the al-Mawasi zone following evacuation orders in other areas of Gaza.
The Israeli military warned that these areas are considered "active combat zones" and threatened civilians with consequences should they return.
Palestinian and UN officials say that nowhere in the besieged Palestinian territory is safe.
About 90% of the population of the Gaza Strip has been displaced at least once since October 2023, when Israel launched its aggression against Gaza.
Rights groups and Palestinian officials have condemned such forced displacement orders as collective punishment and part of Israel’s ongoing genocidal war on Gaza.
Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he is “committed” to US President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to take over the Gaza Strip and displace its Palestinian residents.
Legal experts say the vicious Trump scheme would violate international law and amount to ethnic cleansing.
Meanwhile, the Israeli war machine continues its genocidal campaign in Gaza, killing nearly 90 Palestinians in just 24 hours.
Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed over the past month in the vicinity of areas where food was being handed out. According to the UN, over 550 Palestinians have been killed while trying to access food under the current US-Israeli aid distribution mechanism in Gaza.
More than 56,500 Palestinians, most of them women and children, have been killed in Israeli strikes across Gaza. Thousands of victims are feared trapped under rubble, inaccessible to emergency and civil defense teams due to relentless Israeli attacks.
In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former war minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its war on the blockaded Palestinian region.
