The United States announced yesterday, Friday, the transfer of remaining enriched uranium from an old research reactor in Venezuela to the US.
In detail, the US Department of Energy said in a statement that 13.5 kilograms of enriched uranium were removed from the RV-1 reactor located in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas.
The Department indicated that the transferred material exceeded the 20% enrichment level specified for highly enriched uranium, explaining that it had become surplus after research activities at the reactor ceased in 1991.
The Department noted that the uranium was safely transported from the reactor to a port in Venezuela before being loaded onto a special cargo ship and shipped to the United States.
It added that the material was transported to the Savannah River Site facility in South Carolina for processing and reuse.
On January 3, the US military launched an attack on Venezuela that resulted in deaths and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who were then taken to the United States.
Trump had previously announced that the US would take over the administration of Venezuela during a transitional period and would send its companies to invest in the oil sector, without specifying a timeline.
Following talks between Washington and the government of Venezuelan interim president Delcy Rodríguez, the two countries agreed in early March to restore diplomatic relations.
