The director of al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, Mohammed Abu Salmiya, confirmed on Sunday that more than 10,000 injured people in the Gaza Strip require advanced surgeries, including neurosurgery, vascular surgery, and orthopedic procedures.

Abu Salmiya stressed that any delay in treating these cases could lead to the loss of limbs and potentially loss of life.

He explained that wounded individuals suffering from shrapnel lodged in their bodies are enduring compounded suffering and require treatment abroad because such medical care cannot be provided inside the Gaza Strip.

Abu Salmiya pointed out that the retained shrapnel has serious negative effects on the injured, as the body repeatedly attacks foreign objects. He warned that this can result in complications, poisoning, and infections that may ultimately lead to limb loss or death.

He further stated that the healthcare sector in Gaza suffers from a severe shortage of medical supplies and lacks many of the tools required for surgeries, with shortages reaching as high as 80 percent.

He pointed out that more than 50 percent of essential medicines are unavailable, in addition to 40 percent of emergency medications considered critical for saving lives.

As a result of the devastating genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, Gaza’s healthcare system is facing a sharp shortage of the necessary resources needed to treat patients, in addition to the destruction, bombardment, and shutdown of hospitals across the territory.
