The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has strongly denounced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s illegal entry into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem.
On Sunday morning, Netanyahu published footage and photographs on social media documenting his participation the previous evening in a Jewish ritual within the tunnels extending beneath the bustling Old City of occupied East Jerusalem and the perimeter of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
In a statement released on social media, the Palestinian resistance organization condemned the Israeli official's unauthorized presence at the Islamic holy site.
Hamas stated that Netanyahu’s intrusion “into the subterranean passages and excavation sites below the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Al-Buraq Wall, accompanied by provocative rhetoric, constitutes a blatant infringement upon its identity and status.”
“The Al-Aqsa Mosque—in its entirety, including its courtyards, prayer halls, walls, and gates—will remain an exclusively Islamic sanctuary,” Hamas emphasized.
The movement proceeded to highlight established facts confirming the Islamic heritage of the holy site: “This remains an indisputable fact: the occupying authority’s excavations, incursions, rituals, and attempts to enforce its Biblical narrative will never succeed in altering the site’s identity or erasing its historical landmarks.”
Netanyahu, accompanied by several cabinet ministers and thousands of Israelis, entered the Western Wall plaza in occupied East Jerusalem under heavy security deployment on Sunday.
The Jerusalem Governorate noted in an official report that thousands of Israeli forces and visitors accessed the plaza after traversing Wadi Street in the Old City.
The governorate added that the raid was followed by calls to prayer and religious rituals at the Gate of Mercy (Bab al-Rahma), one of the primary gates of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. It also highlighted that substantial numbers of Palestinians had gathered in the area to perform prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque and conduct trade in the Old City.
Local authorities urged Palestinians to mobilize toward Al-Aqsa Mosque to counter these incursions and “thwart the occupying power’s plans” as Yom Kippur, a major Jewish observance, approaches.
Israeli regime forces maintain control over the Western Wall plaza, citing its importance as a Jewish religious venue, where incursions are frequently conducted on various occasions.
The Islamic Waqf Administration and the Jerusalem Governorate maintain that the Al-Buraq Wall is an integral component of the Islamic holy sites.
The Western Wall plaza, which Israeli authorities keep open continuously, hosts religious ceremonies, prayers, and official state events, with security checkpoints operating at all entry points.
The Western Wall, referred to in Arabic as Ha’it al-Buraq, serves as an ancient prayer site for Jews. However, Zionist groups have increasingly advanced claims of actual ownership over the structure.
Such claims remain widely rejected, as the Wall forms an intrinsic part of the enclosure of the Haram al-Sharif (Noble Sanctuary), while the courtyard facing it constitutes a public thoroughfare and forms part of the Abu Midian Waqf endowment.
Historical regulations have consistently barred individuals from affixing items to the Wall or placing benches and seating in front of it, as such actions impede public access and imply physical ownership.
Certain individuals persist in inserting folded prayer notes into the crevices between the stones, causing structural erosion over time.
Palestinians have for centuries safeguarded the Islamic heritage of the Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound.
Efforts by the Israeli regime and contemporary plans aimed at dividing or Judaizing the sacred Islamic site—revered in the Holy Quran as the first Qiblah for Muslims—have consistently been thwarted.
