Airfields in southern and eastern Greenland are being examined for a broader US military role, as the Pentagon reviews the infrastructure needed to accommodate additional aircraft and personnel, Defense One reported Tuesday.

Construction on new facilities could begin in 2027, according to a senior US defense official cited by the outlet. Military planners are expected to use the coming winter to assess their options, with weather conditions limiting the opportunity to begin work before then.

The preparations follow an agreement signed by the United States, Denmark and Greenland on September 22, supplementing the defense framework established in 1951.

The document provides for new US military areas at Narsarsuaq in the south and Mestersvig in the east, alongside expanded activities at Pituffik Space Base. Technical arrangements for the additional sites are to be agreed among the parties.

The accord also reaffirms the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination. Its entry into force is conditional on a diplomatic notification confirming the completion of the necessary parliamentary procedures in Denmark and Greenland.
