Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez urged, on Friday, the immediate suspension of the EU partnership agreement with Israel due to its ongoing genocide in Gaza.

In a speech before the Spanish Parliament, Sánchez called the actions of the Israeli government one of the darkest chapters of the 21st century.

He noted that Spain and Ireland requested in February 2024 an EU review of Israel’s compliance with the agreement, citing a June 23 report by EU High Representative Kaja Kallas that confirmed Israel violated Article 2 on human rights.

Sánchez criticized the EU’s inaction, stating no entity violating EU principles and using starvation as a weapon against Palestine can be its partner.

He concluded, “We cannot be complicit in the greatest genocide of this century through indifference or political calculation.”
