The United States intends to sign an agreement with Denmark and Greenland to reopen a Cold War-era military base in Narsarsuaq, southern Greenland, and construct another facility at Mestersvig on the eastern coast—a site currently utilized by the Danish Special Forces’ Sirius Dog Sled Patrol.

According to “Reuters”, citing three informed sources speaking on condition of anonymity, the text of the forthcoming agreement has not yet been published, and specific details will be finalized following the signing.

The move comes after months of pressure from US President Donald Trump to gain control over Greenland, amidst public opinion polls showing overwhelming opposition from residents of the semi-autonomous territory.

For its part, Denmark confirmed that the agreement aims to place Arctic security under the oversight of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), rather than remaining solely the responsibility of Washington and Copenhagen.
