Female Palestinian detainees held in the Israeli Damon prison continue to suffer from a growing scabies outbreak alongside harsh living conditions, human rights and prisoner advocacy groups reported.
According to statements from the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS), recent legal visits confirmed that multiple female detainees have contracted the contagious skin disease. Out of more than 90 women incarcerated at the facility, including pregnant women, minors, and individuals with chronic health issues, several have tested positive for the infection.
The organization emphasized that the surge in scabies cases is directly linked to punitive and unsanitary measures enforced by jail authorities. These include excessive humidity, severe overcrowding in cells, poor ventilation, denial of sunlight, and a critical shortage of personal hygiene supplies and clean clothing.
Advocates noted that denial of treatment and medical neglect have turned the skin condition from a manageable ailment into a severe health risk. Detainees report suffering from painful skin inflammation, ulcers, and persistent sleep deprivation due to intense itching, with many being denied adequate care.
Advocacy groups have urged international human rights bodies to intervene urgently, conduct investigations into medical negligence inside the facilities, and ensure proper healthcare for the incarcerated women.
